Melissa is one of our Support Workers in South Australia. She loves being a part of people’s lives as they age and tells us a little bit about one of her customers.

What inspired you to become a Support Worker?
I love working with people and am passionate about aged care. I believe age should be no barrier to doing whatever people want to do.

What do you love most about your role?
I love getting to know the people I work with. Everyone is unique, and the work is never boring.

How have you found working with HCA Home as a Support Worker?
I have found it really good. I have always felt very supported despite working in the community by myself and have always been encouraged to call or email if I have any questions or issues.

Tell us a little bit about one of your customers and the kinds of activities you are involved in?
My customer’s garden means a lot to him, so we spend a lot of time around his shed and garden. We do a lot of chatting and reminiscing about his life. I also assist him to keep his house tidy etc. which he enjoys participating in.

What’s one thing you do to brighten this customer’s day?
The main thing I can do is put in extra effort to listen to his life stories.

Share one great memory you have with this customer.
Reading aloud from his diary and laughing about his childhood stories – he gets a lot of joy from this.

What impact do you feel you have in your customers’ lives?
I feel I have a positive impact on my customers’ lives by helping them stay independent in their own homes and continuing the day to day activities they love.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I have 3 beautiful children and I am studying psychology.
