Midwives play an integral role in one of life’s most beautiful and life-changing events–bringing new life into the world. At Healthcare Australia (HCA), we have the privilege of working with midwives who are passionate, compassionate, and deeply dedicated to their craft. Through our recent International Midwives Day survey, many of our midwives shared their inspiring experiences, the joys of their profession, and invaluable advice for newcomers to this rewarding career.
Here’s what they had to say.
Why Did You Become a Midwife?
From a young age, many of our midwives felt a strong calling toward women’s health, pregnancy, and birth. Some discovered their passion by becoming mothers themselves, while others saw midwifery as a natural progression after their nursing studies.
For midwife Nicola Shakesby in New South Wales, midwifery was about being present for a family’s happiest moments. “I wanted to be in a caring profession and be part of the happiest day in people’s lives,” she explains. Similarly, Sui Hua Wong from Victoria enjoys nurturing newborns who need some extra care and cherishes the opportunity to guide parents through the beginning of their parenting journeys.
For all our midwives, their work isn’t just a profession–it’s a heartfelt commitment to supporting families during life’s most pivotal moments.
The Most Rewarding Part of Being a Midwife
For many HCA midwives, the rewards of their role are too numerous to list. Witnessing the overwhelming joy of parents meeting their newborns for the first time is an experience that never loses its magic.
Svetlana Williams explains her perspective in a way that resonates with many midwives. “For me, it is so rewarding to work with women during pregnancy and childbirth–to empower them, watch them gain strength, and succeed during this momentous time,” she shares.
The support midwives provide often goes beyond delivering babies. They become advocates, educators, and emotional lifelines, helping parents learn new skills, feel confident in taking their babies home, and understand the available support systems. Brenda Reynolds from Victoria stresses the importance of guiding mothers who may not have family around, helping them build their support network.
Midwives also provide crucial care for babies requiring extra help. “There’s immense satisfaction in helping sick babies recover and grow so they can finally go home with their parents,” shares Keri Ann Hart, also from Victoria.
Advice for Aspiring and New Midwives
Becoming a midwife is a rewarding path, but it’s not without its challenges. The wisdom and encouragement shared by our experienced midwives are essential for those just starting their careers.
1. Stay Committed Through Challenges
Mary Gaffney from New South Wales reassures new midwives that the hard days are far outweighed by the joy of the role. “For every bad day, there will be 100 good ones. Always give your best, keep caring, and loving your patients,” she advises.
2. Trust and Respect New Mothers
Midwives often guide and mentor new mothers, but it’s equally important to trust their instincts. Brenda Reynolds emphasises how vital it is to listen and observe. “Pay attention to new mums. You can learn a lot by observing their demeanour–whether they’re anxious, fatigued, or in need of extra support at home,” she explains.
3. Focus on Skill Development Early
Vanessa Mullin, a midwife with 15 years of experience, advises new graduates to seek workplaces that offer diverse learning opportunities. “Rotate across all areas–antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and special care. Keep your skills up in all areas to be versatile, especially if you wish to become an agency midwife,” she suggests.
She also recommends engaging in continued education. Programs like PROMPT (Practical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) and RANZCOG FSEP (Foetal Surveillance Education Program) help midwives stay on top of evidence-based practices and gain hands-on confidence.
4. Maintain Work-Life Balance
The nature of midwifery can be physically and emotionally demanding. HCA midwives stress the importance of self-care, balancing workloads, and seeking support when needed. Open communication with peers about challenges and experiences is crucial to maintaining emotional well-being.
“Whatever the mode of birth, midwives have the power to make it as positive as it can be. Always reflect on your practice and support each other,” one midwife shares.
Why Midwifery Matters
Midwives don’t just help deliver babies–they empower individuals, strengthen families, and create lasting memories. Through empathy, knowledge, and care, they transform childbirth into a positive and life-affirming event for parents.
For those who feel drawn to this vital role, midwifery offers the chance to make an enduring impact. Whether empowering a woman through labour or mentoring a new mother in her first days of parenthood, midwifery is a career filled with purpose and heart.
