Allied Health FAQs

What is allied health?

Allied health defines the broad range of health professionals (excluding doctors and nurses) who aim to prevent, diagnose and treat a broad range of conditions and illnesses.

The most common areas where allied health professionals work are aged care, disability, mental health, rehabilitative care and musculoskeletal health. Allied health professionals work across various settings and organisations, such as:

  • Aged care homes
  • Wellness centres
  • Hospitals
  • Private clinics
  • Community health centres
  • Mental health services
How does HCA help with allied health locum recruitment?

We help you with your resume and do interview preparation with you to ensure you’ve got the best chance at securing work. Other perks of locum assignments are the ability to choose your desired location(s) of work, the ability to travel, exposure to many different caseloads and clinical settings. You can choose the length of your locum and enjoy more flexibility!

What are the benefits of becoming a locum allied health professional with HCA?

Locums are great for building on your experience and allowing you to build on areas you are passionate about.

With agency bookings like locums, we talk in hourly rates, you will be paid each week from HCA and often you can expect your locum to be extended before the end date. If your locum does come to an end, our team will be able to line up another locum following a check in with you to see what you’re after for your next assignment!

If you would like to continue to locum, we can move you to another site, or if you want to take a break, we make a note of when you would like to work with us again and alert you before your start date of the roles that are available.

What are some entry-level roles in allied health?

Many allied health careers begin with entry-level positions that offer real-world experience and a pathway into long-term clinical work. If you’re researching how to become an allied health worker, support roles are a practical starting point.

One example is an allied health assistant, a role that involves helping qualified clinicians deliver care in aged care homes, hospitals, community centres and disability services. If you’ve ever wondered what an allied health assistant does, it’s a support-based role that includes tasks like assisting with therapy exercises, preparing treatment spaces and recording progress under supervision.

An allied health assistant career can lead to further training and registration in more specialised fields. These roles are in demand nationwide, and the rate of an allied health assistant’s salary per hour can be highly competitive, especially in regional placements or agency work.
