For many international nurses, a move to Australia represents a chance to explore breathtaking landscapes, enjoy a laid-back lifestyle, and grow their careers in a thriving healthcare system. Lizzie, originally from Essex in England, took the leap in 2018 and has since embarked on an incredible adventure across Australia as a travel nurse with Healthcare Australia (HCA).
Through her travels and work, Lizzie has gained invaluable experiences, made lifelong memories, and embraced the flexibility of travel nursing. Her story is a testament to the opportunities waiting for nurses looking to combine professional growth with adventure.
The Start of an Australian Adventure
Lizzie’s life changed when she booked a one-way ticket to Australia in 2018. Driven by a passion for travel, she was fortunate to have her best friend, Tanya, as her companion for the adventure. Together, they explored Australia in every way imaginable—including road trips in campervans, rooftop tents, and even nights camping under the stars near Uluru.
Reflecting on her experiences, Lizzie says, “We’ve worked as nurses in Queensland, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, but we’ve also embraced roles as dairy farmhands, apple pickers, and even staff at a wilderness resort in the Flinders Ranges. It’s been the best experience!”
The Work Side of Things
For Lizzie, working as a travel nurse was a major shift from her nursing career in England. “I had never worked with an agency before moving to Australia, and doing so in a new country was a big adjustment,” she shares. “But the flexibility to pick up work across different states has been incredible. It’s allowed me to explore as I go.”
Travel nursing also provided essential support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to a temporary visa arrangement, Lizzie was able to remain in Australia and continue working, helping to address local healthcare needs.
Lizzie has embraced travel nursing for its variety and adaptability, finding opportunities that align with her personal and professional goals.
Unique Challenges in the Northern Territory
During her travels, Lizzie eventually settled into a nursing role in the Northern Territory. This region offers unique challenges and rewards, from adapting to the relentless heat to spotting local wildlife, like snakes that blend in with the environment.
“One of my colleagues told me, ‘If it looks like a stick, it’s probably not a stick,’” Lizzie laughs, recalling her introduction to life in the Northern Territory.
Despite these challenges, Lizzie loves the supportive work culture she’s witnessed in the NT. “Policies here are well-managed, and everyone looks out for each other. It makes overcoming the challenges that much easier,” she explains.
Discovering Darwin
Lizzie is quick to recommend the Northern Territory, particularly Darwin, to anyone considering travel nursing in Australia. “Darwin has such a vibrant community with people from all walks of life,” she says. “You’ll meet incredible colleagues, enjoy great opportunities, and never run out of things to do.”
From the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets to exploring nearby national parks like Litchfield and Kakadu, Darwin is a hub of adventure for those lucky enough to work there. Lizzie’s favourite part? Combining her love of work with unforgettable day trips and the chance to cool off during the dry season.
“I’m looking forward to exploring even more of the NT’s stunning national parks now that the seasons are changing,” she shares. “There’s always something new to discover.”
Advice for International Nurses
Lizzie’s story is a great example of how to make the most of travel nursing opportunities. For nurses considering a similar path, she offers this advice:
- Take the Leap: “Moving abroad can be daunting, but the rewards are beyond worth it. Be brave and go for it!”
- Adapt and Be Open: With so much variety in placements and settings, travel nursing teaches you to grow in different ways.
- Choose Flexibility: The ability to move between work locations and explore new environments is a standout feature of travel nursing.
- Make Use of Local Opportunities: Whether it’s events, dining, or outdoor adventures, immerse yourself in the local culture wherever you work.
What’s Next?
Looking forward, Lizzie hopes to continue working in the Northern Territory for a while longer before heading to New Zealand with Tanya for the next leg of their adventure. While leaving Australia behind will be bittersweet, she’s confident it’s not goodbye forever.
“I’ll definitely return,” Lizzie says with a smile. “Australia has given me so many incredible memories and experiences. It’s a place I’ll always cherish.”
