A Guide for Travel Nurses: Preparing for Your Adventure

Starting a Travel Nursing assignment is an exciting chapter, one filled with new experiences, incredible Australian landscapes, and the chance to make a real impact in rural and remote communities.

With every placement comes an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. But once your contract is locked in and your start date is set, one question quickly moves to the top of the list: “What on earth do I pack?” When you’re limited to a single suitcase for a six, eight, or twelve-week placement, packing smart becomes essential. To help you feel prepared and confident, we’ve pulled together a refreshed, practical guide to get you ready for your next adventure.

Packing Tips for Space, Comfort & Simplicity

Use Packing Cubes – If you haven’t embraced packing cubes yet, now is the time. They’re the easiest way to keep your work clothes, casual wear, shoes, and underwear organised, making unpacking in your temporary home a breeze.

Roll, Don’t Fold – Rolling your clothes saves valuable space and helps prevent wrinkles. This is especially useful if you’re travelling to remote communities where baggage allowances or restrictions on small aircraft can be tight.

Bring Versatile Footwear – Your placement will likely include a mix of long shifts, downtime, and exploring. Pack:

  • Flip-flops/thongs
  • Your most comfortable work shoes
  • Sneakers for walking or exercise
  • One pair of neat shoes for social outings or events

Make Your New Space Feel Like Home

Add Personal Touches – A few comfort items can make all the difference:

  • A favourite pillowcase or lightweight sheet
  • Photos of friends and family
  • Essential oils or a small diffuser to create a calming end of shift ritual

Stay Connected & Entertained – Downtime matters too! Consider bringing:

  • An iPad, tablet or eReader
  • A phone loaded with extra data or a portable hotspot (free Wi Fi can be rare in remote areas—Telstra hotspots work well)
  • A mini Bluetooth speaker for music or podcasts

Must Have Tools for Everyday Convenience

A Reliable Portable Charger – Between travel days, long shifts, and exploring your new surroundings, a portable charger keeps your devices from letting you down.

Reusable Water Bottle & Coffee Essentials – Stay hydrated and caffeinated:

  • A Yeti or similar insulated drink bottle for hot climates
  • An AeroPress or mini plunger for quality coffee anywhere

Healthy Snacks & Pantry Basics – Remote towns can have limited or pricey food options. Bring:

  • Your go-to spices in small zip lock bags
  • Nut mixes, dried fruit, protein bars, or other nutritious snacks

Sunscreen & Insect Repellent – In tropical or remote areas, these essentials can be expensive or hard to find, so it’s best to pack your own.

Shift Work Survival Essentials

Earplugs & an Eye Mask – Daytime sleep can be challenging. Quality earplugs and an eye mask help you adjust quickly and sleep more soundly.

Climate-Appropriate, Respectful Clothing – Choose lightweight, breathable clothing suited to the region you’re visiting. If heading to an Indigenous community, take time to understand local customs so your clothing is culturally respectful.

Pro Tips for Smooth Travel

Flying to Your Placement – Check your airline’s baggage limits before you pack.

  • Rex often allows around 15 kg for checked baggage
  • Qantas and Virgin typically offer 23 kg or more
  • Be extremely careful with carry on baggage weight, both Virgin and JetStar flights are very strict about this. Being slightly over on your baggage weight could result in extra payments being required to board.

Join Frequent Flyer Programs Programs like Qantas Frequent Flyer or Virgin Velocity are free to join and can earn you points for future flights, upgrades, or merchandise. Coffee Lovers Take Note: If you’re particular about your brew, consider packing your favourite beans. Quality coffee isn’t always easy to come by in remote areas.
