Sunrise Swims and More Life: Why Nurses Love Australia

Australia gets around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Compared to places like the UK’s 1,500? The math speaks for itself. International Candidate Liaison, Char shares her experience moving from the UK to Australia.

Many move to Australia for the sun, but it’s so much more than a weather change. Many find a lifestyle that feeds their soul and aligns with how they love to live their life. As nurses, you spend your life looking after others, but here, the environment looks after you. We share why the Australian mornings can make you feel like you are getting “more life” and how we at Healthcare Australia make it easy for you to make the same move many others have.

Do you want an extra 3 hours?

I’ve always been a morning person. Back in London, I had a great routine: gym, meditation, and planning the day. But it always felt like I was squeezing those things in before the real day started. In Australia, it’s different. It feels like you get an extra three hours of “life” before you even log on.

Take this morning: it was perfect (but most mornings are). I walked the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte, caught a 7am DJ set at Icebergs (a random surprise) and swam in the Bronte rock pool just as the sun was coming up. I walked back and made breakfast, all before 9am. The most amazing part? I wasn’t the only one. The coast was buzzing with people. Everyone is out doing something: running, surfing, morning coffee catchups. The morning culture is easily my favourite thing about this country. It’s not just about the sun; it’s about the fact that the sun encourages everyone to get up and make the most of their mornings before the workday even begins.

A productive morning shapes how your day goes

A study by Talker Research found that 49% of people believe their morning routine plays a “major” role in dictating the quality of their entire day. The 5 am alarm is part of my routine now, and it’s no longer hard to get up. It’s never easy at the start, but the sun and the sea help that, especially when our sunrises are as beautiful as they are. I truly believe that giving yourself an extra hour or two in the morning is the most productive thing you can do for your mental health and your work.

This lifestyle is truly unmatched. Australians “work to live,” which was alien to me, having grown up in the UK. So, if you’re anything like me, someone who loves a sunrise, early morning ocean swims, morning coffee walk catch-ups, and seizing the day, then you will fit in perfectly here. And don’t even get me started on the evening culture.

Your Perfect Sunrise Morning – Eastern Suburbs Sydney

5am – Wake Up – Wash Face – Get Ready – Banana

5:30 – Walk down to Bondi and start the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk—take in all the incredible views (photos below), maybe catch a dj doing a set

6:10 – Arrive at Bronte pools, drop your stuff and head for a swim

6:40 – Shower, dry off and head to The Coop for coffee and Banana Bread (you will not be disappointed)

7:15 – Walk back along the coast

8:00 – Arrive back at home and get ready for work
