Celebrating Midwives and Babies

On International Midwives Day, we take a moment to celebrate the incredible work midwives do in welcoming new life into the world. Midwives play an essential role in Australia’s healthcare system, supporting expecting parents and ensuring the safe arrival of babies. Their dedication, compassion, and expertise make a profound difference.

To honour midwives and highlight the remarkable world of birthing, we’ve gathered some fun and fascinating facts about midwives and the babies they help deliver.

The Vital Role of Midwives in Australia

Did you know there are approximately 33,500 midwives across Australia working tirelessly to care for mothers and newborns? These skilled professionals are vital, especially considering that over 300,000 babies were born in 2017 alone.

Midwives are particularly busy in New South Wales, where the highest number of births took place with 94,684 babies delivered in 2017. Following this were Victoria with 81,713 births and Queensland with 60,999 births. Even areas with smaller populations play their part, with Western Australia delivering 34,945 babies, South Australia 19,467, Tasmania 5,873, the Northern Territory 3,877, and the Australian Capital Territory 5,068. On average, one baby is born in Australia every 1 minute and 43 seconds, which certainly keeps midwives on their toes!

When Are Most Babies Born?

If you’ve noticed a lot of birthdays in September, you’re not imagining things. September is the most popular month for births in Australia. Why? The answer lies nine months earlier during the festive season. Christmas and New Year’s celebrations create a spike in conceptions, bringing a flurry of springtime birthdays the following year.

Popular Baby Names and Trends

When it comes to naming these bundles of joy, some names continue to shine year after year. For girls, the top five baby names in 2017 were:

  1. Sophia
  2. Olivia
  3. Emma
  4. Ava
  5. Isabella

And for boys, the most popular names included:

  1. Jackson
  2. Liam
  3. Noah
  4. Aiden
  5. Lucas

These classic favourites reflect a mix of timeless choices and modern trends for Australian families.

The Numbers Behind Newborns

The figures surrounding newborn care are just as fascinating as their names. For instance:

  • Average household size with babies is 1.8 children.
  • 68% of births are natural, highlighting Australia’s commitment to safe and diverse birthing practices.
  • The average birth weight for Australian newborns is 3.3kg.

One does not truly appreciate the work that goes into caring for newborns until realising that each baby uses between 2,500 and 3,000 nappies in their first year alone!

Stellar Babies and Astrology

If you’re into star signs, you may be interested to know that the most common zodiac signs for Australian babies over the past decade are Virgo, Aries, and Libra. Whether or not you believe in astrology, it’s an intriguing way to look at the shared traits of different birth periods.

Beyond the Delivery Room

The celebration of midwives goes beyond just the delivery of babies. Midwives offer continued emotional, physical, and practical support to families as they adapt to life with a newborn. They provide education about proper infant care, maternal health, and breastfeeding, helping parents feel confident in their new role.
