Nursing in Australia: Insights From Canadian Nurse Brandi

For many nurses, the opportunity to work internationally offers professional development, lifestyle perks, and a fresh perspective on healthcare practices. For Brandi, a Canadian Endorsed Enrolled Nurse now living her dream in Australia, choosing to work with Healthcare Australia (HCA) was one of the best decisions of her life.

From navigating the registration process to adjusting to unique nursing procedures, Brandi’s story highlights the benefits, challenges, and exciting opportunities of agency nursing in Australia. Here’s what she had to share about her experience.

A Smooth Transition to Nursing in Australia

For internationally qualified nurses like Brandi, registering in Australia might sound complicated. However, Brandi found the process simple and straightforward.

“The registration process was very easy,” she explains. “I sent my school syllabus and identification documents to AHPRA, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Once my registration was confirmed, I just had to present my identification in person when I arrived in Australia to complete the process.”

With her registration finalised, finding work through HCA was seamless.

“Australia is full of nursing opportunities, so securing a position wasn’t difficult. HCA made it simple to get started and supported me throughout the transition.”

Agency Nursing With Healthcare Australia

Brandi speaks highly of her experience as an agency nurse with HCA. The variety of work, professional development options, and vibrant team culture have made a lasting impression.

“HCA is incredibly supportive of their nurses, always providing plenty of shifts and generous perks. From offering free Basic Life Support (BLS) and Manual Handling Training to eLearning modules, they make it easier to meet Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for my AHPRA registration,” she shares.

Social events and team outings have also helped Brandi build connections in her new home. “Being an international nurse, you don’t know many people when you move. HCA’s social events are such a great way to meet others and feel part of a team.”

Adjusting to Australian Nursing Practices

When asked about the differences between nursing in Canada and Australia, Brandi noted both similarities and adjustments.

“Nursing here is quite similar to what I did back in Canada, but there are differences in procedures. For instance, in Canada, I couldn’t administer IV medications, but I can do so in Australia. On the other hand, I could give S8 and S4 medications independently in Canada, but in Australia, those require double-checking with a Registered Nurse.”

She adds, “There’s always someone to ask for guidance if you’re unsure. Educators and in-charge nurses are so approachable and helpful here.”

By working in a range of departments, including surgical wards caring for gynaecology, orthopaedics, ENT, and urology patients, Brandi has gained exposure to diverse cases. Each placement has added to her skills and professional development.

A Day in the Life of an Agency Nurse

Brandi’s workdays start and end with patient-centred care. “My day begins with a handover. If no patients have yet returned to the ward, I spend time reviewing charts and organising a schedule. I focus on checking patients’ stability, ensuring dressings are intact, monitoring IV lines, and meeting medication schedules.”

Morning shifts often involve assisting patients with personal care routines, such as showering and bed-making, while evening shifts centre on helping patients settle in for the night, performing checks, and organising paperwork for the next day.

“Nursing shifts are dynamic, and no two days are the same. It keeps things exciting and rewarding,” she says.

How HCA Has Enhanced Brandi’s Career

Working with HCA has not only broadened Brandi’s professional experience but also enriched her personal life.

“I’ve worked across various areas of nursing, which has made me a well-rounded professional. The chance to explore different roles is invaluable, helping me identify my strengths and areas I want to develop further,” she explains.

Brandi’s greatest takeaway from agency nursing is the unparalleled flexibility it offers. “You get to decide when and where you work. That flexibility allows me to enjoy all the incredible lifestyle benefits Australia has to offer.”

From sunny beaches to thrilling travel opportunities, the Australian lifestyle has been a major draw. “The weather, the beaches, the laid-back vibe—I love everything about it. There’s nothing to complain about!”

Advice for International Nurses

When asked what advice she’d give to international nurses considering working in Australia, Brandi doesn’t hesitate.

“Don’t hesitate to make the move! The opportunities and support here are outstanding, and you won’t regret the decision. HCA provides all the resources you need to build your career while making the transition as smooth as possible.”

A Community for Nurses

Building relationships can be one of the most rewarding aspects of agency nursing, particularly for those far from home. “The sense of community at HCA is amazing. From ongoing training to hosting fun social events, they make sure nurses feel supported professionally and personally.”
