Nursing Opportunities in Australia with HCA

Moving to Australia to work as a nurse is a dream for many healthcare professionals worldwide. With its stunning landscapes, world-class healthcare system, and vibrant lifestyle, it’s easy to see why Australia is a top destination. Grant Howley, a British Mental Health Nurse, shares his inspiring story of making the leap to Australia with the support of Healthcare Australia (HCA).

If you’re considering a career as a travel nurse in Australia, Grant’s insights will provide invaluable guidance on preparation, settling in, and navigating professional opportunities.

Making the Decision

Grant first came across Healthcare Australia while searching for agencies specialising in working holiday visas. “I found HCA on Google,” he explains. “Initially, I had a passive interest in coming to Australia, but once I spoke to a representative, they broke it all down. The process seemed much more achievable after that.”

The paperwork and preparation involved in moving internationally can feel daunting at first. However, HCA’s team provided Grant with step-by-step support, from visa advice to organising his nursing registration.

Registration and Preparation

Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration is a vital step for any international nurse aspiring to work in Australia. Grant’s registration process took about seven months, and while it required additional documentation, he felt the effort was worthwhile.

“My advice is to reach out to HCA as soon as you decide to move,” says Grant. “They provided great advice on applying for my visa and navigating AHPRA registration. Even after arriving in Australia, there was no pressure to join HCA, but their approach aligned perfectly with what I needed at the time.”

HCA offers solutions for nurses waiting for their AHPRA registration to be approved, such as working as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) in the interim. “I had an informal interview at HCA, completed my police checks and mandatory training within a week, and started working straight away,” Grant recalls.

Nursing in Australia vs the UK

Moving across the globe often means adapting to new systems and protocols, and for Grant, the transition came with both similarities and differences.

“I’ve worked in various hospitals across Sydney, and they’re quite similar to the UK in terms of organisation. However, there are differences with the Australian Mental Health Act and medication brand names,” he shares.

Currently, Grant is working on a two-month placement in Bourke, a travel nursing assignment in western New South Wales. There, he has gained firsthand exposure to Aboriginal culture and the unique mental health needs of rural communities.

“This has been a fantastic learning opportunity,” says Grant. “Working as a Community Psychiatric Nurse in Bourke allowed me to hone clinical skills and deepen my understanding of mental health care in a community-focused setting.”

Lifestyle Changes

One of the most notable changes Grant observed since moving to Australia is the work-life balance.

“Before coming here, I didn’t fully understand what a better work-life balance meant,” he says. “The cost of living in Australia is higher than in the UK, but the wages are better, and there’s always something to do, even on a budget, like spending the day at the beach.”

Australia’s friendly and outdoorsy culture extends to the workplace, making it easy to settle in and form connections. Grant found making friends simple, whether through HCA or other activities. “I was nervous about moving alone, but I now have a wonderful circle of friends. Even in Bourke, I’ve made meaningful friendships that I’ll treasure.”

Advice for Nurses Considering the Move

Reflecting on his experience, Grant encourages other nurses to take the leap, calling it “hands down the best decision” of his life.

“Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,” he advises. “I gave up a great management role in the UK and have no regrets. Australia offers amazing professional opportunities for those committed to their work.”

For nurses unsure where to begin, Grant emphasises the importance of preparation. “Start the AHPRA process early and lean on HCA for guidance. Their support made everything from starting work to finding travel nursing placements seamless.”

Why Choose Healthcare Australia?

Working with HCA has opened countless doors for Grant, allowing him to explore urban hospitals and smaller communities like Bourke. “HCA has been brilliant,” he says. “They organised my travel nursing placement in Bourke, which has been the highlight of my career so far.”

HCA’s national presence, tailored job opportunities, and extensive support system have helped countless international nurses like Grant thrive in their Australian healthcare careers.
