Explore Key Career Paths in Allied Health
Allied health professionals play a vital role in supporting physical, mental and social wellbeing. From rehabilitation to communication and mobility, there are multiple rewarding pathways within the field. Here are three key roles that offer strong career prospects and room for growth:
Physiotherapists
Physiotherapists help individuals recover from injury, manage chronic conditions and improve their physical function through targeted movement therapies. They’re in demand across a wide range of settings, including aged care facilities, hospitals, private clinics and community programs such as the NDIS.
A physiotherapy career offers strong long-term stability, variety in caseloads and opportunities to specialise in areas like musculoskeletal health, neuro rehab or paediatrics. With HCA, you can take on flexible short-term contracts or secure permanent roles across metro, regional and remote settings, backed by clinical support and nationwide job access.
Speech Pathologists
Speech pathologists assess and treat people who have difficulty with communication or swallowing, supporting clients across all life stages — from children with developmental delays to older adults recovering from stroke. You’ll find roles in schools, hospitals, aged care, community health and disability support.
The profession combines clinical skill with creativity and compassion, making it ideal for those who enjoy problem-solving and building long-term rapport with clients. HCA supports speech pathologists with a variety of placements and access to ongoing professional development.
Allied Health Assistants
Allied health assistants (AHAs) provide essential support to qualified therapists across settings like aged care, hospitals, rehab centres and community disability programs. AHA roles are ideal for those starting out in health care and looking to gain hands-on experience while working under clinical supervision.
Pursuing an allied health assistant career offers a practical and rewarding entry point into the health sector. With strong demand for AHAs across Australia, this role can lead to long-term growth opportunities and further qualifications. Those working through HCA may also benefit from attractive allied health assistant salary per hour rates, especially in regional or high-demand areas.

Other perks of locum assignments are the ability to choose your desired location(s) of work, the ability to travel, exposure to many different caseloads and clinical settings. You can choose the length of your locum and enjoy more flexibility!
Locums are great for building on your experience and allowing you to build on areas you are passionate about.
With agency bookings like locums, we talk in hourly rates, you will be paid each week from HCA and often you can expect your locum to be extended before the end date. If your locum does come to an end, our team will be able to line up another locum following a check in with you to see what you’re after for your next assignment!
If you would like to continue to locum, we can move you to another site, or if you want to take a break, we make a note of when you would like to work with us again and alert you before your start date of the roles that are available.
Many allied health careers begin with entry-level positions that offer real-world experience and a pathway into long-term clinical work. If you’re researching how to become an allied health worker, support roles are a practical starting point.
One example is an allied health assistant, a role that involves helping qualified clinicians deliver care in aged care homes, hospitals, community centres and disability services. If you’ve ever wondered what an allied health assistant does, it’s a support-based role that includes tasks like assisting with therapy exercises, preparing treatment spaces and recording progress under supervision.
An allied health assistant career can lead to further training and registration in more specialised fields. These roles are in demand nationwide, and the rate of an allied health assistant’s salary per hour can be highly competitive, especially in regional placements or agency work.
