Seeing South Australia Through the Eyes of Travel Nurse Amanda

South Australia’s diverse landscapes and welcoming communities offer a unique backdrop for adventure and professional fulfilment, especially for those pursuing travel nursing. For Amanda, a travel nurse with a passion for exploring and empowering others, life on the road has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Through roles across various settings, Amanda’s nursing career has allowed her to make an impact in healthcare while uncovering the beauty and vibrancy of South Australia. Here, she dives into her experiences, memorable stories, and why travel nursing continues to ignite her passion for her profession.

Amanda’s Journey to Travel Nursing

Born in Ireland, Amanda moved to South Australia with her family at the age of nine. Her nursing aspirations came to life a little later when her children started school. Unsure about committing to the field, Amanda began by studying aged care to see if it would be the right fit.

“I loved it,” Amanda shares. “From there, I started studying to be an Enrolled Nurse (EN), and my passion only grew stronger.”

After working as an EN, Amanda pursued her qualifications as a Registered Nurse through the University of South Australia. Her career progressed through specialty areas, including sexual health, STI/BBV testing, and transgender health services. Each step brought new experiences, equipping Amanda with the skills to take on her next big challenge.

Inspired by a desire to keep learning and a love for connecting with people, Amanda transitioned into corrections nursing and, eventually, signed up with Healthcare Australia as a travel nurse. “Joining HCA has given me opportunities to travel, grow, and share my experiences while providing care,” she explains.

Working Across Unique Placements

Travel nursing has taken Amanda to a variety of fascinating healthcare settings, from correctional facilities to emergency response teams.

Life as a Nurse in Corrections

One of Amanda’s most memorable placements was in a correctional health setting. The environment gave her the chance to help inmates regain control of their health while navigating their circumstances.

“When working in corrections, I focus on treating everyone with respect. The patients come for health services, not to be judged,” she says. “If you treat them respectfully, you’ll receive the same in return.”

This approach allowed Amanda to build trust with patients, making her role both impactful and rewarding.

Emergency Response Team Highlights

Amanda recently worked as part of an Emergency Response Team in Ceduna and Coober Pedy, helping manage local COVID-19 outbreaks. The role involved assessing COVID-positive patients, providing treatment during home visits, and arranging urgent medical flights to Adelaide when necessary.

Connecting with Indigenous Australians became a highlight of Amanda’s time in this role. “I had daily yarns with local elders,” she shares. “They helped me communicate important health messages to vulnerable individuals in the community, ensuring they could return home safely and COVID-free.”

Stories like these showcase the deep connections travel nursing offers, making a difference in both individuals’ lives and entire communities.

Memorable Moments on the Job

Travel nursing brings surprises, and Amanda’s experience in Ceduna stands out. She recalls opening a small clinic in a community camp when a snake appeared on-site.

“I was chatting with a paramedic when we heard some noise and realised a group of men were stoning a brown snake for food,” she recounts. Luckily, the paramedic turned out to be a snake catcher! Grabbing his kit, he safely relocated the snake.

Later, Amanda had a touching encounter with an Indigenous elder who gifted her a painting featuring a snake. This unique piece of art became a cherished memento of her time in Ceduna.

Exploring South Australia During Time Off

For Amanda, days off are a chance to hop in a 4WD and explore the stunning landscapes and hidden gems of South Australia. From dirt roads leading to sunsets in Coober Pedy to trying her hand at “noodling” for opals, Amanda seizes every opportunity to immerse herself in her surroundings.

“The locals are always happy to share tips on the best spots to visit,” she explains. “Coober Pedy, in particular, has amazing sunsets and a fantastic place to eat at Big Winch 360.”

Balancing exploration with work is one of the greatest benefits of travel nursing, offering not just professional enrichment but also personal fulfilment.

What Makes Healthcare Australia Stand Out?

A self-proclaimed learner at heart, Amanda thrives on the variety and challenges travel nursing offers. With Healthcare Australia, she feels supported every step of the way.

“My consultants really listen and understand my needs,” Amanda says. “HCA provides such a wide range of opportunities, and no two days are the same.”

Whether vaccinating in nursing homes or building rapport in remote healthcare clinics, Amanda feels empowered by the knowledge that she’s making a difference.

For anyone considering a career in travel nursing, Amanda has one key piece of advice: “Just do it. You’ll meet incredible people, learn so much, and get paid to travel. It’s the perfect mix of work and adventure.”

And with Healthcare Australia, Amanda is confident that new travel nurses will find the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
