Exploring Western Australia Through Travel Nursing

Travel nursing offers the unique opportunity to combine professional growth with personal exploration, and for India, this career path has led to unforgettable adventures across Western Australia. From gaining new clinical skills to immersing herself in breathtaking landscapes, her travel nursing journey has been both fulfilling and inspiring.

With Healthcare Australia (HCA), India has discovered the perfect balance between advancing her career and enjoying the freedom to explore. Here’s a deeper look into her experience and why travel nursing might be the step you’ve been waiting for in your own career.

India’s Path into Travel Nursing

Originally from Geelong, India began her career in general medicine before transitioning to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing in Melbourne. For nearly eight years, she worked at a tertiary hospital, gaining valuable expertise. Yet, after the pandemic intensified the demands of ICU nursing, like many in the workforce, she found herself burnt out and searching for a change.

A road trip along Western Australia’s stunning coast with a travel nurse friend sparked something in her. Inspired by the idea of designing her work-life balance while exploring the country, India embraced travel nursing with HCA.

“I loved the idea of choosing my time off and using my career as a way to see more of Australia,” she says. “I’ve been with HCA for almost a year, and it’s been a life-changing experience.”

What Makes Travel Nursing Special?

One of the greatest benefits of travel nursing is the opportunity to expand clinical skills through varied placements. For India, these have included preparing patients for flight transfers, working alongside volunteer ambulance crews, managing resuscitations, and completing an immunisation course.

“Travel nursing has opened so many doors for me,” India shares. “I’ve gained experiences I’d never have had otherwise, like working across ED, aged care, and primary health care. I also love that I can stay connected to ICU nursing by picking up casual shifts when I visit home.”

But the rewards extend beyond career growth. Travel nursing allows nurses to explore new destinations, meet diverse communities, and enjoy a greater sense of flexibility and freedom.

Highlights from India’s Contracts

1. Denmark (WA)

India’s first HCA placement was in Denmark, WA–a small town surrounded by stunning natural beauty. While it wasn’t her initial choice (Albany had been her first preference), Denmark turned out to be a delightful surprise.

“It was everything I had hoped for,” India explains. “Denmark had beautiful coastlines, hikes, and a friendly community. I even tried the local yoga studio–highly recommend!”

Her work in Denmark provided valuable skills, particularly in ED triage, aged care, and acute ward nursing. Discovering Albany’s attractions was another bonus, prompting her to take a subsequent placement there and continue exploring the region.

2. Wyndham (WA)

Another significant placement for India was Wyndham, located in the Kimberley region. This contract presented unique challenges, including overnight on-call responsibilities and solo response to emergencies.

“I was nervous before arriving, especially since I had limited exposure to First Nations cultures while working in Melbourne. But the community was so welcoming, and the experience was hugely rewarding,” she says.

Throughout her time in Wyndham, India expanded her skill set by handling additional responsibilities like ordering supplies and managing pharmacy stocks, gaining a new level of professional confidence.

Balancing Work with Adventure

Travel nursing isn’t just about work. For India, her contracts offered plenty of time to explore and appreciate Australia’s landscapes. Whether hiking through Fitzgerald River National Park, visiting Dubbo Zoo, or soaking in the serenity of beaches near Albany, she has found ways to make the most of every location.

“I always bring my car to contracts. It gives me the freedom to explore on my days off and see as much as possible,” she says.

Tips for Aspiring Travel Nurses

If you’re considering travel nursing, India offers some advice to help you prepare for this adventure-filled career path.

  1. Create a Comfortable Space: “Bring items that remind you of home, like your own linen, pillow, or a candle. These small touches make accommodation much more welcoming.”
  2. Say Yes to Experiences: “When locals invite you to activities like fishing or exploring, always say yes. It’s a great way to connect and learn.”
  3. Stay Flexible and Curious: “Every placement will challenge you in new ways. Be ready to grow, whether it’s taking on new responsibilities, exploring different clinical fields, or learning better workflows.”

What’s Next for India?

India’s current contract wraps up in Walgett, NSW, and she’s looking forward to her next adventure at Manning Base ICU in Taree. Beyond that, she’s keeping her options open.

“There are so many places I want to visit–Darwin, Tasmania, Far North Queensland. I’m also considering studying midwifery to expand my options and possibly work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service,” she shares.

Why Travel Nursing is Worth It

For India, travel nursing has been a way to reconnect with her passion for healthcare while finding joy in exploration. It’s the perfect balance of professional development and personal adventure.

If you’re ready to step out of your comfort zone, experience new environments, and grow as a nurse, travel nursing could be your next great chapter.
