5 Lessons I Learned While Moving Abroad

Moving to a new country is a leap that’s both exciting and nerve-wracking. For many professionals, the decision to leave familiarity behind and start a new chapter brings incredible personal and professional rewards. Casey Harris, a former recruitment team member at Healthcare Australia (HCA) turned globetrotter, shares her inspiring story of taking this leap. After moving from Australia to London without knowing anyone, Casey navigated her adventure with courage and curiosity, and in the process, learned life-changing lessons.

Here are her five key takeaways from living abroad, and how they could inspire anyone considering this big move–whether as a travel nurse or for personal growth!

Lesson 1: You Are Your Best Company

One revelation Casey had during her move was the realisation of just how enriching solo adventures can be. “You can truly enjoy your own company when you’re on your own,” Casey explains. Whether that means wandering the streets of a new city, solving little challenges on your own, or simply appreciating your independence, solo time is an empowering experience.

When living abroad, there’s a level of freedom that forces you to rediscover yourself. Decisions are entirely your own–no waiting for others or compromising plans. For Casey, it meant finding joy in small moments and savouring time spent exploring London’s bustling streets and tranquil parks at her own pace.

Lesson 2: You’re Smarter Than You Think

Moving abroad teaches you to think on your feet. It introduces you to challenges you’d never encounter at home, whether it’s finding your way around a city with an unfamiliar public transport system or navigating cultural differences.

For Casey, this independence helped her uncover skills and talents she didn’t realise she had. “I didn’t expect how capable I’d feel when solving everyday problems on my own, like reading maps or figuring out the answers to questions without anyone’s help,” she shares. This sense of competence and capability built up her confidence and showed her just how resourceful she could be.

Lesson 3: There’s a Community for Everyone

One of Casey’s biggest concerns before moving to London was whether or not she’d make friends. “Little did I know, the opposite would be true,” she says. “There were so many people in the exact same situation as me, and we instantly bonded.”

When you move abroad, you meet others who are also adjusting to a different country, away from family and home. These shared experiences bring people together quickly, and the friendships forged become a source of comfort and joy. “I found my friends became like family,” Casey adds. “There was always someone to explore with, and I’ve never had a quiet or boring weekend.”

Lesson 4: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone Is Life-Changing

Being forced out of your comfort zone might feel daunting, but according to Casey, it’s one of the best things you can do for personal growth.

“I used to be quite shy,” she admits, “but moving alone pushed me to meet new people, build connections, and even find my voice in unfamiliar situations. It completely changed how I approach life.”

For professionals like travel nurses, working in a new location also helps you grow professionally by meeting different teams, adapting to distinct systems, and stepping up to challenges in new settings.

Lesson 5: Everything Happens for a Reason

Perhaps one of Casey’s most poignant lessons is the understanding that even the hardest experiences offer valuable opportunities to grow. “At the time, you might ask, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ but every challenge eventually leads to something meaningful,” she notes.

These tough moments showed Casey how resilient she could be, emphasising the importance of seeing new opportunities in difficult situations. It’s a philosophy that translates well for healthcare professionals embarking on travel nursing assignments, where unexpected challenges are balanced with immense personal reward.

The Magic of Exploring

Beyond the valuable life lessons, moving abroad gave Casey the chance to indulge her wanderlust. Since her move to London, she’s explored the snow-covered landscapes of Latvia, basked in the sunshine of the Canary Islands, and travelled through stunning cities across Ireland, Croatia, Amsterdam, and beyond.

What’s more, her job with HCA’s London office gave her the unique opportunity to guide British and Irish healthcare professionals on their own journeys to Australia. This not only deepened her professional expertise but allowed her to share her personal insights with others considering a similar adventure.

“Every week, my travel list gets longer. I haven’t had the time to even feel homesick because there’s simply so much to see and do!” she says.
