Life as a Remote Area Nurse (RAN): Mary’s Journey from Stability to Adventure

For many nurses, transitioning from familiar settings into the unpredictable world of Remote Area Nursing (RAN) can seem daunting. For Mary, a long-time nurse from New Zealand now based in Shepparton, Victoria, it was a decision that opened the door to extraordinary opportunities, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections.

Having been a nurse for over 20 years, Mary’s career began in regional hospitals across Victoria. She worked at Goulburn Valley Health not only as a nurse but also as a clinical educator for the University of Melbourne. After spending a significant portion of her career in these roles, as well as in the rural healthcare landscape of Kyabram, Mary made the bold decision to leave her secure job for an entirely new realm of nursing adventure.

Here, Mary shares her experience as a Remote Area Nurse, the challenges and triumphs of working in rural communities, and why she wouldn’t dream of going back to a traditional role.

A Typical Day in Meekatharra

Mary’s current placement is in the Midwest of Western Australia, at a small Multi-Purpose Site (MPS) in Meekatharra. Her role as part of HCA’s Surge Response has allowed her to experience the full spectrum of care, from aged care to emergency response.

“Every day is different,” Mary says. “One day you could be assisting with residents, while the next, you might be seeing patients in ED or admitting them to the acute ward. It’s all about flexibility and teamwork.”

The facility also provides mental health, community health, and general practitioner services, ensuring local residents have access to a variety of care options. However, like many rural sites, Meekatharra faces its share of staffing challenges intensified by the impact of COVID-19.

Despite these challenges, Mary highlights the supportive atmosphere within the team. “The staff here are an amazing bunch, and the accommodation is lovely, complete with a staff pool for those warmer days,” she shares.

The Road to Remote Area Nursing

While Remote Area Nursing presents exciting opportunities, it also requires a specific skill set. Mary mentions critical qualifications such as REC (Remote Emergency Care), MEC (Maternal Emergency Care), ALS (Advanced Life Support), and advanced immunisation training as prerequisites for RAN roles.

For those considering RAN as their next career move, Mary emphasises the importance of maintaining an open mind and a willingness to adapt. “Remote work is as uniquely rewarding as it is challenging. You must be ready to step out of your comfort zone, but the opportunities for growth are extraordinary,” she explains.

Mary also credits HCA’s New to Remote Program and its Education Allowance for making her transition seamless. “HCA provides fantastic training and resources, allowing you to meet these qualifications while building confidence for remote placements,” she adds.

Memorable Moments on the Job

One of Mary’s most defining moments in remote practice occurred during her first placement in Kalkarindji, Northern Territory. While on call with another RAN, she attended to a young male involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. The situation required hours of effort to stabilise him before arranging a transfer.

“The experience was intense, but seeing him later and having him recognise my voice was profoundly rewarding,” Mary reflects. The incident also prompted the introduction of tranexamic acid into their first aid kits, enhancing their capacity to save lives in emergencies.

Stories like this illustrate the critical role RANs play in remote areas, where access to immediate, specialised care is often limited.

Navigating COVID Times

Mary recalls how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped her work environment, particularly during border closures. Quarantining at Howard Springs before starting her first remote contract was initially challenging, but surprisingly rewarding. “I enjoyed it so much I went back for a second stint 12 months later,” she laughs.

With restrictions relaxing, travel has become more flexible, allowing her to explore diverse placements across Australia.

Building a Sense of Community

Beyond clinical work, Mary’s ability to connect with people stands out. Baking and sharing treats with her team have become a simple yet meaningful way of building camaraderie.

Her connection with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) at Meekatharra has also been a highlight. “Working alongside the RFDS builds a strong support network that enhances the quality of care we deliver to the community,” she notes.

What’s Next for Mary?

After completing her current placement, Mary plans to take on a contract in Port Pirie, where she’ll also spend time with her son and his partner as they prepare for the arrival of her first grandchild.

Looking ahead, she dreams of coastal placements with great fishing opportunities, combining her love of outdoor adventures with her passion for nursing.

For Mary, Remote Area Nursing isn’t just a job. It’s a lifestyle filled with purpose, challenge, and connection. “I love sharing my experiences and hearing stories from other RANs. The community we build in these unique settings is truly special,” she concludes.
