Every healthcare professional has a unique story, and it’s often their experiences, compassion, and dedication that truly define the impact they have on others. Today, we’re excited to introduce Lilian, one of the standout dietitians in our team at Healthcare Australia (HCA). Since joining as a new graduate in early 2019, Lilian has become a key player in delivering exceptional nutritional care across aged care facilities in Adelaide and beyond.
If you’re curious about what it’s like working as part of a dynamic healthcare team, Lilian’s story offers an inspiring glimpse. From improving elderly residents’ quality of life to travelling across South Australia, here’s what her meaningful career looks like.
Why Aged Care?
For Lilian, working in aged care offered the opportunity to provide personalised support to a community that deserves the utmost respect and care. “There’s such a strong sense of community in aged care homes. They’re warm and inviting environments where I feel privileged to work,” she shares.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is collaborating with elderly residents and their families. “It’s about improving their quality of life through tailored nutrition, and being a part of that is incredibly fulfilling.”
A Day in the Life
Lilian’s day-to-day life as a dietitian is as varied as it is busy. She travels to multiple sites around Adelaide and regional South Australia, allowing her exposure to different communities and settings.
On a typical day, she visits two to three nursing homes, adapting to each facility’s unique environment. “No two days are the same,” she notes. “I meet new people in every location, and that keeps the job exciting and engaging.”
While the constant change can be challenging, it’s also what Lilian loves most about her role. Instead of being limited to one site, the diversity of her placements helps her grow both professionally and personally.
The Joys of Working with the Elderly
Lilian has developed a deep bond with the elderly community she serves. “The residents have so much wisdom and life experience to share, and it’s truly humbling to spend time with them,” she says.
One of her most treasured memories involves a resident who expressed heartfelt gratitude. “We were wrapping up our session, and as he bid farewell, he placed his hand over his heart and said, ‘Thank you, dear. You’ve made my heart fuller and lighter.’ Moments like that remind me why I love what I do.”
The Role of a Dietitian
Nutrition plays a critical role in the overall health and wellbeing of aged care residents, and Lilian ensures each individual receives the support they need to thrive.
The process begins with speaking to staff and other healthcare professionals to understand the resident’s unique needs and challenges. After meeting with the resident directly, Lilian designs nutrition strategies tailored to their goals. This could involve recommending dietary changes to suit specific health conditions or suggesting oral supplements in consultation with doctors and nurses.
“Once the interventions are in place, we work closely with kitchen staff, carers, and other team members to ensure everything is implemented smoothly and effectively,” she explains.
A Collaborative Team
Although the HCA dietetics team works autonomously most of the time, the ability to connect via Microsoft Teams ensures strong collaboration and support. “We often share advice or experiences through forums. Even though I haven’t met all my colleagues in person, I still feel connected to the team,” Lilian says.
Her role highlights how collaboration, even when done virtually, can strengthen the level of care offered to clients and foster a sense of community among healthcare professionals.
Career Insights for Aspiring Dietitians
Reflecting on her career path, Lilian shares advice for students and graduates entering the field. “Be open to all opportunities,” she emphasises. “You never know where your true passion lies until you explore different possibilities. For me, it was aged care, and choosing this path has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
The Best Part of the Job
When asked about her favourite aspect of the job, Lilian is quick to respond. “Without a doubt, it’s spending time with the residents and learning about their lives. Those moments of connection brighten my day, and knowing I’ve made a positive impact on their wellbeing is incredibly rewarding.”
She encourages anyone considering a career in healthcare to explore roles in aged care and community support. “It’s such a meaningful way to make a difference,” she says.
