Catherine Murray, a distinguished nurse, educator, and leadership coach, has built an inspiring career that celebrates adaptability, empathy, and a passion for making a difference. With experience spanning decades and disciplines, her story offers invaluable lessons for nurses at all stages of their careers.
Recently, Catherine visited Healthcare Australia (HCA) to share insights from her profound career. Over coffee, she reflected on her professional milestones, her time as a travel nurse, and her passion for impacting healthcare on both micro and macro levels.
Whether you’re just beginning your nursing career or looking for opportunities to grow, Catherine’s story is a testament to the diverse and rewarding pathways nursing offers.
Building a Career of Impact
Catherine’s nursing career began at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where she worked in the acute respiratory unit. After two years, she moved to Sydney, working at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) in the Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
“My early career offered such a dynamic start,” Catherine shares. “Being exposed to the acute setting taught me the importance of precision, collaboration, and patient-centred care.”
She later pursued midwifery training at the Royal Hospital for Women but soon realised her interests extended beyond direct patient care. Her Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University, majoring in Philosophy and Psychology, fostered her interest in empathy-driven care.
Exploring Palliative Care
One of Catherine’s most fulfilling career chapters was her time in palliative care. Working at Sacred Heart Hospice introduced her to end-of-life care, where she supported young men living with HIV/AIDS.
“Those years taught me so much about humanity,” Catherine reflects. “The discussions I had with patients and families were deeply moving and a reminder of why I entered nursing.”
Her expertise grew, and she became a Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Consultant at St George Hospital. Alongside her clinical role, she co-founded the Palliative Care Nurses Association (NSW), which remains a vital part of the Australian College of Nursing today.
Leadership and Specialised Projects
Catherine’s leadership trajectory began after she had children, when she worked as a Nurse Unit Manager at St Joseph’s Hospital. Later, as Senior Nurse Manager for Cancer Services at Liverpool Hospital, she championed interdisciplinary collaboration to improve cancer care.
A career-defining project for Catherine was her work at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. She collaborated with healthcare leaders, architects, and patients to design and launch the comprehensive Sydney Cancer Centre.
“Chris O’Brien was an incredible person to collaborate with,” Catherine recalls. “Together, we worked on creating something meaningful, a space that would reimagine cancer care in Australia. Although Chris passed away before Lifehouse’s opening in 2013, his vision remains central to its operation.”
Working on Lifehouse was more than a professional achievement for Catherine–it was an opportunity to contribute to a project that would shape patient outcomes for years to come.
Transitioning to Flexibility
After decades in hospital systems and clinical leadership, Catherine decided to explore the flexibility of agency roles with Healthcare Australia.
“I heard about Healthcare Australia’s travel nurse opportunities through the NSW team while working at Lifehouse. Joining HCA was seamless, and it allowed me to balance my coaching and family responsibilities with nursing shifts,” she explains.
Catherine values the freedom HCA offers, enabling her to accept shifts that align with her schedule.
“Agency nursing is ideal for people at different career phases–from those looking for something new to nurses wanting to scale back full-time work without leaving healthcare entirely.”
Coaching and Consultancy
Today, Catherine channels her experiences into coaching healthcare teams and leaders. She works closely with hospitals and professionals to improve services, patient care, and team engagement.
“My passion is helping healthcare organisations identify gaps and find solutions,” she says. Through workshops, co-design collaborations, and leadership strategies, Catherine’s work fosters innovation and connection.
She recalls one of her favourite projects, a co-design initiative that improved cancer care pathways. “We brought together patients, families, and clinicians to map their experiences. By listening to everyone involved, we identified ways to streamline their journeys. Engaged patients lead to happier teams, resulting in better outcomes all around.”
Advice for New Nurses
When asked about advice for new graduates, Catherine’s enthusiasm shines. “Nursing is an expansive career. Whether you prefer clinical work, education, or leadership, there are countless paths to explore.”
Resilience is key, she notes, especially in challenging healthcare settings. “Physical and emotional resilience is essential, but having the right team for support makes all the difference,” she emphasises.
She encourages nurses to stay curious, seek mentorship, and look for opportunities that align with their values. “Enjoy the ride,” Catherine says. “There’s no other profession that offers such incredible insight into human life and connection.”
