For many healthcare professionals, a desire to make a deeper impact and explore new environments leads them to opportunities beyond the big city. Andrea, an innovative Occupational Therapist (OT) with Healthcare Australia (HCA), decided to trade urban life in Parramatta, Sydney, for a fulfilling career and meaningful adventures in regional New South Wales.
Andrea’s relocation to Taree, along the beautiful Mid North Coast, has not only enriched her work but broadened her horizons. Her story is a testament to the growth, challenges, and rewards that come with stepping outside your comfort zone.
If you’re an allied health professional considering a change of scenery or career shift, Andrea’s experience might just inspire your next move.
Finding Passion in Occupational Therapy
Andrea’s passion for helping others began long before her career as an OT. “I’ve always had a drive to support people with special needs,” she explains. This commitment naturally developed into an interest in Occupational Therapy, which focuses on empowering individuals to improve their quality of life through practical, person-centred strategies.
“What drew me to OT is its focus on building people’s strengths and supporting them to achieve their unique goals,” Andrea shares. “It also allows me to work with varied populations, from children to adults, in all kinds of settings. This variety ensures the role is always dynamic and rewarding.”
A Day in an OT’s Life
Andrea’s current role involves supporting children aged 0-8 through an early childhood intervention program. Based in Taree, she provides Occupational Therapy sessions in schools, childcare centres, homes, and occasionally at the office.
Her work often takes her beyond Taree to surrounding communities, up to an hour’s drive away. “I spend much of my time at preschools and primary schools,” Andrea explains. “Each day looks slightly different depending on where my clients are based and what they need. That variety is what keeps me engaged.”
From nurturing fine motor skills in young clients to helping them build confidence in daily tasks, Andrea finds her role both impactful and fulfilling.
Growing Professionally and Personally
Since starting her career, Andrea has evolved significantly as a practitioner. “My clinical reasoning has really expanded,” she reflects. Early in her career, she focused on addressing a client’s immediate challenges. With time and experience, she’s learned to take a more holistic approach that includes environmental and situational factors.
“By looking at the bigger picture, I can offer solutions that aren’t just effective today but will continue to benefit the client as they grow,” she says.
Relocating with Support
Making the move from Parramatta to Taree wasn’t a simple decision, but the transition was made easier thanks to the dedicated support of HCA’s Allied Health team.
Matt Meaney, a key team member, worked closely with Andrea to ensure every detail of the move was covered. From arranging accommodation within her budget to offering pastoral support throughout the process, the HCA team ensured Andrea never felt overwhelmed or unsupported.
“They handled everything efficiently,” Andrea recalls. “From finding roles that suited my skills to helping me settle in a completely new environment, they played a massive role in the success of this transition.”
Why Regional Settings Offer Unique Rewards
For Andrea, life in Taree has been a refreshing change. “I joined a small team of two educators, and together, we’ve been able to make a real difference in communities that were in great need of Occupational Therapy services,” she says.
One of the appeals of working in regional settings is the difference a single practitioner can make. Smaller communities often have limited access to healthcare services, and professionals like Andrea quickly become integral to improving residents’ health and wellbeing.
What Makes HCA Stand Out
HCA’s Allied Health team didn’t just support Andrea’s move–they ensured her long-term satisfaction in the role. From regular updates about new opportunities to follow-ups after placements, the team demonstrated a consistent commitment to Andrea’s career growth and happiness.
“HCA makes you feel valued,” Andrea explains. “They don’t just place you and move on. They stay in touch, making sure you’re supported at every step.”
Advice for Allied Health Professionals
Andrea encourages her peers to consider opportunities outside the city if they’re looking for something new or impactful. “I highly recommend working with HCA,” she says. “Their support is unmatched, whether you’re transitioning into regional roles or just starting your career.”
She emphasises the importance of keeping an open mind and trying roles that might initially seem outside your comfort zone. “Challenging yourself and stepping into a new environment can lead to some of the most rewarding experiences,” Andrea adds.
