Why Podiatry Deserves a Closer Look

This year’s Podiatry Week is all about changing perceptions. With the theme “Podiatry: More Than You Think,” it challenges us to reconsider the importance of podiatry, a field often underestimated despite its profound impact on health and well-being.

From managing lower-limb conditions to providing life-altering care for the elderly community, podiatry is a profession that goes beyond what meets the eye. At Healthcare Australia (HCA), we are proud to celebrate and support our incredible podiatrists, especially those making a difference in the aged care sector.

This article explores the diversity of podiatry, the value it brings to our communities, and the unique experiences of our HCA podiatrists–Margot, Sean, and Jonathan–as they share why this profession is so rewarding.

What Does a Podiatrist Do?

While foot health is at the core of podiatry, a podiatrist’s role is much broader than many realise. They don’t just treat bunions or trim toenails. Instead, their expertise encompasses diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Injuries like sprains and fractures.
  • Lower-limb disorders, including nerve and circulatory issues.
  • Chronic conditions such as diabetic foot problems or heel spurs.

Podiatrists work in diverse settings–from private practices to hospitals, rehabilitation centres, aged care facilities, and community health services. They play an indispensable role in improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing overall quality of life for people across all demographics.

For many seniors, podiatrists are a lifeline. Whether it’s treating wounds, managing skin conditions, or addressing structural issues that make walking difficult, their work helps seniors maintain independence and stay active.

Insights from Podiatrists Across Australia

At HCA Allied Health, we are privileged to work with talented podiatrists who bring skill, compassion, and dedication to their roles. Here’s what some of our team members had to share about their experience in aged care podiatry.

Margot (Queensland)

Margot’s favourite part of her work is the deep connections she builds with elderly clients. She explains how podiatry isn’t just about foot care, but about providing vital support during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

“Many underestimate the impact of proper foot health, especially in aged care. It’s not just about trimming nails. We help manage wounds, prevent falls, and relieve pain, all while sharing conversations with clients whose experiences can teach us so much,” she says.

Margot values the empathy and patience her role requires, as well as the chance to develop clinical skills in wound management. For those considering a career in aged care podiatry, she highlights the personal fulfilment that comes with making a meaningful difference.

“Working at HCA has been energising–their emphasis on growth, innovation, and compassion aligns perfectly with my own values,” she adds.

Sean (New South Wales)

For Sean, no two days are the same as an aged care podiatrist, and that’s what keeps the job exciting. “We’re not just care providers, we’re advocates for our elderly residents,” he explains.

Here’s a snapshot of Sean’s typical day:

  • Morning Routine (6-9 AM): He starts his day with a brisk run or swim, enjoying the quiet morning hours.
  • Resident Visits (9 AM – 3 PM): Sean spends most of his day providing care to around 18 to 20 residents. This includes routine foot care, diabetic assessments, wound management, and follow-ups.
  • Wrap-Up (3.30-4.30 PM): The day ends with clinical notes, referrals, and planning for the next sessions.

“Helping my residents and learning from their stories is the highlight of my day. It’s truly a give-and-take experience,” shares Sean.

Jonathan (Victoria)

Jonathan is excited about the future of podiatry. With HCA, he hopes to foster collaboration among podiatrists and highlight the field’s importance in aged care.

“The future holds great promise. I see opportunities for podiatry to evolve, especially in aged care facilities, where strong teamwork helps us deliver better outcomes,” he says.

Jonathan’s vision includes building stronger networks with fellow podiatrists to share knowledge and refine best practices. His goal is to elevate podiatry’s role in supporting the elderly to stay mobile, healthy, and happy on their feet.

The Value of Podiatry in Aged Care

When it comes to aged care, podiatry is about so much more than just maintaining foot health. It’s about enabling independence, reducing risks such as falls, and improving the overall quality of life.

At HCA, our podiatrists deliver compassionate care by working collaboratively with aged care teams. By addressing issues like diabetic foot management, managing skin tears, and providing regular assessments, they ensure seniors not only stay mobile but do so with confidence.

Why Choose a Career in Podiatry?

If you’re considering a career in healthcare, podiatry offers a unique opportunity to combine technical skills with meaningful patient interactions. Aged care podiatry, in particular, allows professionals to make a direct impact on the lives of seniors.

Here are just some of the benefits of working in podiatry:

  • Diverse career paths in hospitals, clinics, or community settings.
  • Continual opportunities to develop skills in areas like wound care and diabetic management.
  • The rewarding feeling of helping clients regain mobility and independence.

Whether you’re newly qualified or looking for a career change, podiatry could be the fulfilling path you’ve been searching for.
