The Trans-Tasman Connection: Discover the Joys of Travel Nursing in WA

Western Australia (WA) offers incredible opportunities for travel nurses who are ready to experience diverse communities, breathtaking landscapes, and rewarding professional growth. With its vast stretches of coastline, national parks, and unique wildlife encounters, WA has something for everyone drawn to exploration and connection.

Vanessa P., a travel nurse originally from Tauranga, New Zealand, reflects on her experiences moving across the Tasman to work in WA. Her journeys have been filled with amazing adventures, meaningful contributions to healthcare, and personal growth. Here’s why WA should be your next travel nursing destination.

A Land of Contrasts

One of the first things Vanessa noticed about WA is its diversity. Stretching from cooler climates in the south to the tropical heat of the north, WA caters to every kind of adventurer. “Coming from New Zealand, I had only heard of Perth,” Vanessa shares. “Visiting different towns has been eye-opening. Each place has its own charm and amazing scenery.”

Among her standout experiences is Jurien Bay, with its powdery white beaches, turquoise waters, and playful sea lions. Kalbarri took Vanessa’s breath away with its rugged beauty, made even more impactful given the community’s resilience after the devastating cyclone of 2021.

Kalbarri’s health centre also left an impression. “It’s full of helpful, friendly staff, and you even get to enjoy a massage chair at work,” she laughs. The contrast between the small-town charm and the buzz of activity during holiday surges (with the population swelling from 1,200 to around 8,000) made every day an adventure.

Exploring WA as a Travel Nurse

Vanessa’s travel nursing placements have provided her with plenty of opportunities to explore WA’s immense natural beauty. From national parks teeming with vibrant wildlife to small-town gems, there’s something special around every corner.

Her tips for making the most of travel nursing in WA:

  1. Wake up early for sunrises: There’s something magical about starting the day in nature as the first light breaks.
  2. Don’t miss iconic hikes: The Bigurda Trail and Nature’s Bridge in Kalbarri are must-sees for nature lovers.
  3. Engage with locals: Vanessa found the people she met to be overwhelmingly kind, often sharing secret spots or inviting her on tours of their hometowns. A small bottle of wine was her go-to thank-you gift in return!

Getting Around in WA

WA’s size can make travel daunting, but Vanessa shares that there are plenty of reliable options. “Public transport is great, and hiring a car is ideal for making the most of your time off,” she says. Thrifty, a rental car company, offers discounts for nurses, making it easier to explore multiple regions.

From roaring up to Monkey Mia to swim with dolphins, to scenic drives to Lake Argyle in the Kimberley, having your own transport opens up countless possibilities.

Unique Communities in WA

Working in WA has provided Vanessa with invaluable nursing experiences in a range of distinct settings.

  • Bunbury ED: A dynamic environment with a fast-paced team spirit. Though the city is bustling, the beaches and Pelican Point offer tranquillity and refreshing breaks from work.
  • Wyndham in the Kimberley: A striking contrast to Bunbury’s urban vibe, this remote community highlighted the importance of resourcefulness and collaboration. “It felt like being on an African safari at Parry Lagoons,” Vanessa says. “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve worked.”

The Kimberley region, with its iconic boab trees and mesmerising sunsets, left a lasting impression. Vanessa hopes to return in the wet season to watch the landscape transform with lush greenery and cascading waterfalls.

Special Highlights

Of all her adventures across WA, Vanessa cherishes moments that blended natural beauty with professional milestones. Some highlights include:

  • Helping save wildlife: Her assignments often involved care that extended beyond the human population.
  • Birdwatching in the Kimberleys: A day spent with a local guide introduced Vanessa to incredible native birds and their habitats.
  • Abrolhos Islands: Flying over coral reefs, witnessing coral spawning, and swimming in pristine waters topped Vanessa’s list of unforgettable experiences.

Tips for Travel Nurses in WA

Vanessa has some practical advice for nurses considering a career in WA travel nursing:

  • Be experienced: Having a solid foundation in nursing is critical, as some placements may leave you on shifts with minimal support staff.
  • Bring comforts from home: Items like a hammock, air fryer, and travel coffee machine became small luxuries that made Vanessa’s living spaces welcoming.
  • Stay connected: Participating in social media groups, like HCA’s Placement Passport group, can help you feel part of a larger team. Seeing others’ travel photos also inspires new adventures.

While travel nursing can be challenging at times, especially during moments like the holiday season away from family, Vanessa emphasises the value of building friendships with your colleagues and staying optimistic. “We’re all navigating similar emotions, and there’s comfort in sharing that.”

WA’s Endless Opportunities

Western Australia isn’t just a place to work–it’s a gateway to unforgettable adventures. From making a big impact as a travel nurse to immersing yourself in world-class landscapes and cultures, WA is the perfect setting for personal and professional growth.
