How I Became a Travel Nurse: Irna’s Inspiring Journey

A change in career direction can be daunting, but for Irna, a nurse with Healthcare Australia (HCA), embarking on a new chapter as a Travel Nurse brought fresh opportunities for personal growth, professional development, and unexpected adventures.

After over a decade in a surgical ward, Irna was ready for something new, and accepting the challenge of R&R nursing has transformed her career into a rewarding exploration of Australia’s unique landscapes and healthcare challenges. Here’s her story.

Seeking a New Challenge

Prior to becoming a travel nurse, Irna worked part-time in a busy general surgical ward in Australia for 11 years. Though she enjoyed her role, she began to feel restless, craving a new challenge outside her everyday routine.

“I found myself bored and unmotivated, questioning whether I still looked forward to going to work,” Irna recalls. “The idea of Rural and Remote nursing had always intrigued me, so I took the leap and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

Making the switch from a permanent position to a casual, less predictable role came with some apprehensions. However, the decision ignited her passion for nursing. “I’m learning so much from my placements and experiencing healthcare in ways I never could have imagined,” she says.

How Travel Nursing Opens Up Australia

One of the unexpected joys of travel nursing for Irna has been the opportunity to explore the country. Having been born in Indonesia and primarily travelling between Indonesia and Australia to visit family, Irna had always dreamed of exploring more of Australia’s diverse regions.

“Rural and Remote nursing has turned that dream into reality,” she says, recounting some of the incredible locations she’s worked in. “I’ve been stationed in places I never imagined, from beaches to mountains, and it’s been amazing.”

Exploring New Horizons

Irna’s favourite placement so far has been in Grafton, NSW, where she enjoyed the perfect mix of coastal beauty and stunning hinterlands. From the breathtaking Dorrigo National Park with its waterfalls and rainforest walks to peaceful beaches, Grafton offered her countless opportunities for nature-inspired reflection outside of work.

But for Irna, the adventure isn’t solely about destinations. She loves the unexpected connections and friendships fostered through HCA. “Meeting other nurses who share this passion feels like connecting with family,” she shares.

The Draw of a New Practice Area

Branching into corrections has been one of Irna’s most unique placements within R&R nursing. Leaving the comfort of ward nursing after 11 years, Irna found herself drawn to the challenge and variety corrections nursing offered.

“I wanted something completely different,” she explains. “I was apprehensive at first, but the decision to take this path has been incredibly rewarding. It’s given me new skills and a fresh perspective on healthcare.”

Staying Mentally and Physically Fit

For Irna, travel nursing isn’t just about her professional growth; it’s about holistic well-being. She prioritises her mental and physical health by incorporating exercise into her day, no matter how busy her schedule gets.

“I wasn’t always fit, but I’ve come to realise the importance of exercise for both body and mind,” she says. Her advice? Make physical activity a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.

“I like high-intensity interval training because it’s quick and effective. Even with limited space in a motel room, there are plenty of exercises you can do, like squats, push-ups, and lunges.” For Irna, exercise is not just about fitness; it’s her stress relief.

Balancing Work and Life

Travel nursing allows Irna to tailor her work-life balance. On her days off, she enjoys immersing herself in natural surroundings.

“I’ve always loved nature, especially the mountains. Spending time outdoors after long shifts clears my mind, so I feel refreshed when it’s time to go back to work,” she shares.

By organising tasks like shopping and washing during her workdays, Irna ensures her off-hours are exclusively for relaxation and exploration.

What’s Next for Irna?

When asked what’s next, Irna lights up at the endless possibilities. “I’m open to going anywhere! Whether it’s a new placement or a challenging remote location, I’m ready for the adventure.”

For Irna, the future is an exciting landscape waiting to be explored. She’d love to continue gaining valuable skills and experiences in more remote settings, knowing that every challenge brings growth.

Advice for Aspiring Travel Nurses

Irna encourages other nurses considering travel or R&R work to take the leap. “It can be daunting, but the rewards far outweigh the risks. You’ll challenge yourself, grow professionally, and experience parts of Australia you never dreamed of visiting.”

And most importantly, the friendships and camaraderie within the HCA network have made all the difference. “The community at HCA is incredible. Everyone is so warm and welcoming, and it feels like you’re part of a family,” she says.

Discover Your Own Journey

Irna’s experience as a travel nurse demonstrates the endless opportunities available for nurses looking to diversify their careers and make a difference in communities across the country. With the support of Healthcare Australia, travel nursing can be a pathway to both professional growth and personal discovery.
