For many international medical professionals, the decision to move to Australia offers the promise of new experiences, career growth, and a fresh perspective on healthcare. Dr Cathal Mullin, an Irish Doctor now working in Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) at Westmead Children’s Hospital, opened up to Healthcare Australia (HCA) about his remarkable professional journey. From his early days in Ireland and the UK to his current role in Australia, Dr Mullin’s story highlights the opportunities and challenges of practising medicine abroad.
If you’ve been considering a move to Australia to advance your medical career, Dr Mullin’s experience may offer valuable insights to guide your decision.
Starting the Journey
Dr Cathal Mullin began his medical training in Ireland and continued his career at the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). With post-graduate experience spanning 8+ years, his areas of speciality include critical care, paediatric surgery, and other surgical specialties.
However, after dedicating several years to the NHS training system, Dr Mullin found himself ready for a change. “I initially came to Australia for just one year, but I liked the system and training here so much more,” he shares. Australia’s healthcare infrastructure and supportive professional environment prompted him to extend his stay and further his training.
With opportunities to work across Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, and New South Wales, Dr Mullin gained diverse experience in different healthcare settings. These experiences eventually led him to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney, where he now works in the challenging but rewarding field of PICU.
Tackling Challenges as an International Medical Graduate
Dr Mullin’s transition to the Australian healthcare system wasn’t without its hurdles. “The biggest challenges have been being an International Medical Graduate (IMG),” he explains. Navigating additional application processes and meeting requirements specific to overseas-trained doctors often felt like a roadblock, regardless of his qualifications and skill set.
Despite these challenges, Dr Mullin persisted and successfully built a thriving career in Australia. His advice to other IMGs planning to make the move? Stay patient, stay prepared, and seek support when needed.
Life in Paediatric Intensive Care
Currently, Dr Mullin works long yet rewarding shifts in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH). “A typical day in PICU is a fast-paced, 12-hour shift,” he explains. The unit specialises in high-complexity cases, with Westmead serving as a major centre for paediatric cardiac surgery and other advanced specialties.
The work may be demanding, but it’s immensely fulfilling. “The patients and their families make it all worthwhile,” says Dr Mullin. “Long-term patients in particular leave a lasting impression, and seeing children recover and return home is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
Advice for Young Doctors
For junior doctors navigating their career pathways, Dr Mullin offers practical advice. He emphasises the importance of clear goals and consistent effort. “Be realistic when choosing a specialty,” he says. “Start working towards it early because the most desirable roles are often the most competitive.”
Another tip? Network extensively. “Building connections is key in Australia,” Dr Mullin adds. “Here, references can sometimes carry even more weight than qualifications during job applications.”
Collaborating with Healthcare Australia
When it came to finding his current role in Australia, Dr Mullin turned to HCA Doctors. “HCA was brilliant,” he says, comparing the agency favourably to previous locum agencies he had worked with. “With other agencies, I had to look for roles myself, but HCA made the process seamless and quickly found me the roles I wanted.”
HCA’s step-by-step support for international medical graduates helped Dr Mullin take the guesswork out of transitioning to Australia’s healthcare system. From initial placement to ongoing support, HCA remains committed to empowering healthcare professionals like him.
