Midwifery Adventures with HCA: A Glimpse into Travel Nursing in Australia

Exploring the world outside of your comfort zone can be both professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling. For midwives Lana and Bernadette from New Zealand, their travel nursing journeys with Healthcare Australia (HCA) have been nothing short of an adventure. From picturesque towns to diverse roles, they’ve embraced the opportunity to grow and contribute to communities across Australia.

If you’re considering travel nursing as a midwife, their stories provide inspiration and practical insights into what makes this path so unique and rewarding.

Different Locations, Unique Opportunities

Lana and Bernadette both took on multiple contracts across Australia, each discovering the charm of new places and the fulfilment of contributing to various healthcare settings.

Lana’s Experience

Lana worked in six different locations during her travel nursing assignments, including Wagga Wagga, Toowoomba, and Port Macquarie. Of all her placements, Port Macquarie stood out as her favourite. “The hospital may have been older, but the friendly and welcoming team made it feel like home,” she shares. Lana even enjoyed her time there so much that she decided to move her family and apply for a permanent position.

Bernadette’s Experience

Bernadette explored Wagga Wagga and Dubbo during her placements. She found each town beautiful in its own way, with Wagga Wagga being particularly convenient due to its proximity to shops and amenities. “The hospital in Wagga Wagga was brand new and a fantastic place to work,” she notes.

These experiences highlight one of the key benefits of travel nursing–the ability to explore diverse regions and choose placements that align with your preferences, whether you’re seeking scenic views, community life, or a fresh professional perspective.

Financial and Professional Rewards

Travel nursing isn’t just about exploring new landscapes; it’s also financially advantageous. Both Lana and Bernadette found the income and perks considerably better compared to their positions in New Zealand.

The Benefits

“I earned about a third more while working in Australia than I did back home,” Bernadette shares. With free accommodation provided, the savings added up quickly. But the rewards went beyond monetary gains.

For Lana, the experience also meant being able to achieve personal goals, like taking her family for a long-overdue holiday to Russia, a dream she hadn’t realised in seven years.

Travel nursing offers the opportunity to gain greater financial independence and invest in both your family and personal development, all while advancing your career in meaningful ways.

A Peek into Life Beyond Work

Downtime during travel nursing assignments is an integral part of the experience. Lana, an avid runner, picked her placements with safety and running-friendly regions in mind. Her free time was spent exploring and staying active.

For Bernadette, social interactions and exploration were her primary leisure activities. “I met incredible people along the way, and we’d often go for meals or on day trips together. I even managed a weekend train trip to Sydney!” she recalls.

Both midwives valued the mix of relaxation and camaraderie, underscoring the importance of balancing work with self-care and community connections.

Bridging Professional Gaps

One common question for nurses and midwives considering placements abroad is whether they’ll feel fully integrated into new clinical environments. For Lana and Bernadette, adapting to Australian midwifery models was seamless.

Appreciating Differences

“Midwifery in New Zealand often involves more autonomy,” Lana explains. “We’re allowed to handle more procedures independently, such as cannulation and prescribing medications. I found that these skills were highly valued by employers in Australia.”

While there are variations between models of care, both Lana and Bernadette appreciated the flexibility and training support offered at their respective placements. Feeling like part of the team from day one made a significant difference, smoothing the transition and allowing them to deliver quality care.

Facing Challenges with Confidence

Like any professional transition, taking the leap into travel nursing comes with its uncertainties. For Lana, leaving her family and steady employment in New Zealand initially felt like a daunting step. Yet, the experience proved to be a stepping stone for both personal and professional growth.

“There are so many opportunities in Australia,” Lana says. “From private practice and antenatal midwifery to group practice models, the scope for midwives is immense. My advice is simple–be brave, and take that first step!”

Bernadette echoes her positivity. “This experience has been incredible. Not only did I enjoy looking after patients in rural Australia, but I’ve also made lifelong friendships. It’s an adventure I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Tips for Aspiring Travel Nurses

For midwives considering this adventurous career path, Lana and Bernadette offer practical advice.

  1. Start Small: Trying short-term contracts can make the transition less overwhelming while giving you a taste of the lifestyle.
  2. Stay Open-Minded: Flexibility is key when it comes to travel nursing. Being open to new locations and ways of working makes the experience more rewarding.
  3. Engage with Your Community: Connections with colleagues and locals make assignments much more meaningful and enjoyable.
  4. Plan for Downtime: Explore local activities to enrich your experience and ensure a healthy work-life balance.

Discovering Fulfilment

Both Lana and Bernadette’s stories highlight a universal truth–travel nursing is about more than just work. It’s about growth, connection, and discovering new possibilities in your career and life.

Whether you’re seeking financial stability, professional diversity, or personal adventure, travel nursing offers a perfect blend of rewards. Take their advice, and don’t hesitate to step outside of your comfort zone. You might just find that it’s the best decision you’ve ever made.
