Experience the Unique Rewards of Travel Nursing with HCA

Meet Ally, an exceptional travel nurse under the Healthcare Australia (HCA) banner, as she shares her incredible nursing adventures. From bustling metro facilities to serene and secluded destinations, Ally’s diverse experiences highlight the endless opportunities travel nursing offers, from professional growth to life-changing landscapes.

Whether you’re curious about travel nursing or seeking inspiration for where your career in healthcare could take you, Ally’s story provides a compelling look into what makes this career path so rewarding.

A Journey into Travel Nursing

Ally’s adventure as a travel nurse began following her graduation with a Diploma of Nursing in 2019. Based in Ipswich, Queensland, she balanced her work in aged care, general practice, and medical/surgical wards while studying for her Bachelor of Nursing. But it wasn’t long before the allure of travel nursing drew her in, enabling her to explore Australia in a way few others get to experience.

Her most recent placement took her to Andamooka, a small opal-mining town of about 300 people located 600 km north of Adelaide in South Australia.

“I love working in places like this,” Ally explains. “Every town has its own unique story, shaped by its people and its landscapes. Travel nursing allows me to experience such diversity in culture and community, all without leaving Australia.”

Working in Andamooka

Through a partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), Ally’s nursing role in Andamooka involves providing healthcare services to a community that would otherwise face challenges accessing medical professionals.

“Working at the local RFDS clinic,” she shares, “I assist the Remote Area Nurse (RAN) in a variety of roles, such as administering IV antibiotics, vaccinations, child health checks, blood pressure monitoring, and pathology collection.”

With a doctor available via telehealth, Ally and her team provide essential care around the clock, offering peace of mind to the community they serve.

“If anyone needs urgent medical attention after hours, we even provide ambulance services,” she adds, underscoring the diversity and importance of a travel nurse’s responsibilities in these areas.

Dreaming Big with the RFDS

For Ally, her time with the RFDS has been hugely influential in shaping her future aspirations.

“They perform incredible work, and I’d love to become a flight nurse one day,” she says. “It’s a goal that will take time, experience, and education to achieve, but it’s definitely something I’m working toward.”

Tips for Aspiring Travel Nurses

Ally’s experiences navigating travel nursing assignments across Australia have given her plenty of insights for those considering similar roles. Here are her top tips to make the most of this unique career path:

  1. Pack Light and Plan Ahead: Groceries and supplies in more remote regions can be limited and costly. Packing versatile items and space-saving essentials can help you stay prepared.
  2. Invest in Quality Luggage: Travelling across rugged locales puts luggage to the test. Reliable straps, zippers, and wheels can save you from unnecessary headaches.
  3. Bring Simple Comforts: Items like a vacuum-sealed pillow, good books, or crafting supplies can make downtime enjoyable and restorative.
  4. Adaptability is Key: “The one thing you can count on in travel nursing is unpredictability,” Ally shares. Flexibility ensures you’re ready for whatever comes your way.
  5. Be Open to New Locations: Whether it’s inner cities or remote beachfronts, travel nursing reveals hidden gems across the country that may surprise you.

Favourite Destinations

Looking back on her travels, Ally names Thursday Island as her favourite destination so far.

“The locals were lovely, and the scenery felt like paradise,” she recalls. Another unforgettable experience was hiking to Australia’s northernmost tip during her placement in Bamaga, Queensland.

“It’s such a stunning region,” she says. “Each hike revealed breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment I cherish to this day.”

Building Connections

A key factor in Ally’s positive travel nursing experience has been her rapport with HCA and her dedicated consultant, Mallory.

“She’s been amazing,” Ally remarks. “No matter how busy she is, she always makes time to provide support and guidance. That level of care makes every assignment easier to approach.”

Having a reliable point of contact equipped Ally not just with placement opportunities but also with the confidence to thrive in unfamiliar settings.

What’s on the Horizon for Ally?

Ally’s love of exploring new locations is clear, and she looks forward to future placements that bring her even closer to Australia’s idyllic coastal landscapes. “I’d love a beachside location next,” she says with a smile. “Somewhere I can swim and soak in the summer vibes sounds ideal.”

For anyone inspired by Ally’s uplifting story, the possibilities of travel nursing in Australia are limitless. With HCA’s extensive network and support systems, you, too, can discover new adventures and advance your healthcare career in ways you never thought possible.
