Every career has a story, and Amanda’s is one of growth, passion, and impact. Starting as a Disability Support Worker with Healthcare Australia (HCA), Amanda found her calling in helping individuals achieve their goals under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Today, she has transitioned into a pivotal role as a Support Coordinator in Victoria, where she continues to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
This article shares Amanda’s inspiring experience at HCA, detailing her career path, memorable moments, and the impact of her work.
From Support Worker to Support Coordinator
Like many in the healthcare field, Amanda’s role began with a foundation in direct support. “I joined HCA Home as a Disability Support Worker in June 2017,” Amanda recalls. “It was such a pleasure to meet and support individuals under the NDIS. Helping people achieve even their short-term goals was incredibly rewarding.”
When the opportunity to transition into a Support Coordinator role arose, it was Amanda’s previous coordinator who gave her the confidence to pursue it. “Pam, my Support Coordinator at the time, told me this role would suit me and encouraged me to apply,” she shares. “I’m so glad I listened to her advice.”
Her career shift reflects HCA’s commitment to recognising and fostering talent within its team. It’s a space where the skills you build in one role can seamlessly connect to new opportunities.
Empowering Clients and Creating Change
Supporting Confidence and Independence
One of Amanda’s key responsibilities as a Support Worker was assisting clients with travel training. This task might sound straightforward, but its impact is profound. “Travel confidence is one of the most important goals for many individuals. It helps them access their communities independently,” Amanda explains.
She also focused on budgeting skills, guiding clients to develop savings strategies. These practical lessons empowered clients to take control of their finances long after Amanda’s involvement.
A Memorable Achievement
Of the many moments Amanda experienced as a Support Worker, one memory stands out. “I supported an individual who worked hard to save up for a brand-new fridge. After months of planning and careful budgeting, the big day finally arrived,” Amanda recalls.
Together, they went to a store in Melton, selected the fridge, arranged payment, and scheduled delivery. “Seeing his confidence and pride in achieving this goal was truly rewarding. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love what I do.”
The Impact of HCA’s Support
Amanda credits much of her positive experience as a Support Worker to HCA. “For every shift, I received all the information I needed about the client, their support needs, and the location,” she says.
What’s more, HCA’s tailored approach made a difference. “With the added support of my coordinator and consultant, my shifts felt meaningful. They aligned my strengths with the client’s goals, creating a collaborative atmosphere where our work made a real impact.”
This partnership enabled Amanda to not only provide exceptional care but also to grow within her role.
The Transition to Support Coordination
A Hands-On Approach to Support Plans
Amanda’s current role as a Support Coordinator allows her to take a bird’s-eye view of the support process while staying connected to clients’ journeys. “I have the privilege to meet new NDIS customers, visit their homes, and discuss their needs and goals,” she explains.
Her primary responsibilities include writing support plans, assigning staff, and monitoring the implementation of those plans. “It’s very rewarding to see how these plans make a tangible difference in our clients’ lives,” Amanda adds.
Drawing from First-Hand Experience
One key factor that informs Amanda’s success as a Support Coordinator is her background as a Disability Support Worker. “Whenever I write a support plan, I put myself in the shoes of a Support Worker,” she says.
This mindset ensures that her plans are practical, detailed, and tailored to the unique needs of every client. “Whether it’s learning my clients’ preferences or addressing specific challenges, having insight into both roles allows me to create plans that truly work.”
Making a Difference Every Day
Whether as a Support Worker or Support Coordinator, Amanda finds immense fulfilment in her work. “It’s a privilege to be part of someone’s everyday journey and to support them in realising their goals,” she says.
Her enthusiasm for her role is contagious, and her story serves as a testament to the positive impact that compassionate care and teamwork can achieve.
