“The caring needs to come from the heart” – A chat with our Support Workers
Our Community Care team loves giving away prizes to our Support Workers.
In December we saw three lucky people take home BIG HCA Rewards prizes as part of our Mystery Shift Competition.
For those who didn’t catch the competition, a combined 85,000 HCA Rewards points were on offer tothree luckySupport Workers who worked shifts during the month ofDecember. The more shifts worked with HCA Care during the competition dates, the more chances they had of winning one of the three prizes.
The lucky winners were announced in early January and we wanted to quickly congratulate them once again.

Richard Blent ‚ Winner of 50,000 HCA Rewards points
Richard Blent, a Brisbane Disability worker and the first place winner of 50,000 HCA Rewards points, tells us that the most rewarding experience of being a Support Worker is being able to see his clients enjoying themselves out of their normal routine; experiencing something new and different.
Having worked with HCA for some time now, Richard says the best thing about working ‘Agency’ is that you never know what to expect as every day is different. He also speaks enthusiastically about the flexibility he enjoys. I work the shifts around what the clients’ needs are, then work everything else around that. I also enjoy the flexibility of choosing when to work, Richard explains.
Consistent withhis high level of care and dedication is Richards emphasis on the clients needs. Always put the client first says Richard. Whether they are incapable of expressing their needs or require extra attention in some area, we need to make sure the best care is given at all times.
Speaking from experience, Richard has one piece of advice for people thinking about a career in the Community Care and Support field, which is Make sure you are caring for the right reasons, a fitting testament to all the hard working Support Workers going above and beyond to give the best quality care, because they care.
We thought it was also fitting to ask Richard what he plans to do with his 50,000 HCA Rewards points. He tells the team he plans to put them towards a new iPhone, a great use of his points.
Patricia Botica ‚ Winner of 25,000 HCA Rewards points
Patsy is a Sydney Disability Support Worker, and our lucky winner of 25,000 HCA Rewards points with our Mystery Shift Competition. Her passion is working with children and the youth population, helping them to become independent.
One of the reasons Patsy enjoys agency care work is the flexibility. Working agency give me a lot of flexibility to spend time with family she says.
We asked Pasty about her biggest accomplishment in her role, in which she had a great story to tell us. Patsy was working in a group home and had to take care of a young girl who had very high challenging behaviours. During the time Patsy worked with the girl, she found a new family, became independent, started a job and grew into a beautiful young lady, which was an extremely gratifying experience Patsy was able to share with us.
Patsy shared with us her one piece of advice that she gives to people considering a career in the caring; A Support Worker cannot be trained to be a good carer; they have to be made that way. The caring needs to come from the heart. It’s not just another job and every Support Worker needs to love what they are doing.
So what does Patsy plan to do with her points? She will put them towards a trip to visit her family over in Western Australia.
