Why I jumped at the opportunity to Nurse in Northern Australia
Margaret Kanyai is a Registered Nurse working in medical and surgical wards in Darwin. Beginning her nursing career in Rhodesia, Africa, Margaret told HCA that she decided to become a Nurse to aid sick patients. Since then, she has nursed in New Zealand for a number of years and in 2015 was given a great opportunity to relocate to Darwin where she has taken on Agency nursing work with us.
Having started her role with HCA’s agency NT Medic in December 2015, Margaret has since been making a fantastic contribution to the health of thousands of Northern Territory based residents. This was summed up when she was awarded the employee of the month award, for receiving fantastic hospital and peer feedback.
One of the many benefits that Margaret has taken advantage of is our relocation and accommodation incentives available in Darwin. We have 8 subsidised accommodation opportunities available to Medical and Surgical Nurses across 3 different properties, which are located in close proximity to the hospitals. Margaret has access to many shifts in Darwin allowing her to make working as an Agency Nurse a full-time job. I work roughly twenty to thirty shifts a month – It suits my lifestyle. I work mornings, late shifts and I also work numerous double shifts when I want to. I enjoy the flexibility as it allows me to visit my family and friends and gives me the opportunity to see a lot of other places.
As a strong, family oriented Nurse, Margaret loves the fact that we offer good pay rates, allowing her to help her family financially, as well as assisting in their further education.
Among the opportunities that presented themselves to Margaret when she moved to Australia was the chance to work a 6 week Rural and Remote placement in Leigh Creek, South Australia. This not only provided Margaret the prospect of gaining different clinical experience but also the opportunity to see some amazing places including Lake Torrens and her favourite place – Port Augusta. I recommend Nurses to try Rural and Remote contracts Margaret proclaims as she reminisces of her experience. (Find out more about working Rural and Remote)
