I’d like to share with you my blog post titled ‘You’re in the Driver’s Seat with HCA Rural & Remote’.
Describing a typical Regional, Rural or Remote contract is often a ‘BIG’ challenge, as each contract is very different. There are several external variables such as geographic location, length of contract, size of the facility, access to Doctors and Medical professionals. Then you also have a number of internal variables such as your own clinical experience, the skills and specialty you are trained in and ultimately, what you plan to get out of your experience.
You really are the master of your own destiny in a Rural & Remote role. This is the reason why so many of our Nurses & Midwives speak about their experience with such passion and excitement.
Suzanne recently completed a contract in Coober Pedy, South Australia and shared the following with our team. “I had the most amazing experience. I met some truly wonderful people and learnt so much about the Aboriginal culture. I felt so welcomed not only by the women, but even some of the men (who for cultural reasons I had minimal interaction with). They all asked me to come back soon. I was placed outside of my comfort zone and at times it was quite challenging but the experience, the skills I learned, the people, the cultural heritage and the stunning beauty of the ‘remoteness’ and ‘peacefulness’ made my experience truly unforgettable.”

Emergency Department (ED) Nurses – QLD
If you have only worked in large metro hospitals, you might enjoy the change to a smaller rural or remote facility. Whether it’s a 4-week contract in rural Queensland (QLD) or a 6-month contract at Alice Springs Hospital, Northern Territory, we have a contract that suits you!
We currently have Emergency Department (ED) contracts available in hospitals of all sizes. As an Emergency Nurse, you can work in emergency rooms, RFDS, ambulances and mining sites to name a few.
Helpful tip: Holding a current Triage and ALS certificate is very advantageous as you can decide the order of treatment for many patients. Read more about training and accreditation for R&R Nurses here
Clinical Nurse (CN) role – Cape York
So, you have worked as an Emergency Department Nurse extensively in rural hospitals and you are looking to take the first step to a more remote role? Perhaps a job for 8 weeks in Kowanyama PHC in the beautiful Cape York is the spot to try! With 5-10 Nurses on hand there is support to help you develop those ED skills of assessment into the indigenous setting with a rotating roster of on call and a visiting Royal Flying Doctor Service Doctors every week you will have a great kick-start into Remote Nursing.
Remote Area Nurse (RAN) role – NT
For those with more than 4 years’ experience and certificates, including REC (Remote Area Nurse), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Care Course), MEC (Maternity Emergency Course), Pharmacotherapeutic and Vaccine Qualifications, you may be eager to practice in a Rural & Remote Indigenous Community. From Central Australia to the Top of Northern Territory, there are many opportunities for RANs due to their high and unique standard of training.
Contracts range anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Free travel & accommodation provided.

Theatre nurse – TI
Thursday Island, Torres/Cape is a sought-after district due to the beautiful location and special weather. Our client requests Nurses working in all areas of Theatre including Scrub/Scouts, Anaesthetic, Recovery and Theatre All-Rounder’s. Once again, you can work all around Australia on contracts from 2 weeks to 6 months; it’s your choice and we offer travel & accommodation incentives.
Generalist Registered Nurse – ICU Nurse New South Wales (NSW)
A large number of contracts available all over NSW ranging from Generalist Registered Nurse to Critical Care/ICU Nurse roles. One important requirement is a current Working With Children Check (WWCC). If working in NSW, this check is a ‘must have’ to obtain Rural & Remote work.
In NSW, you are employed and paid by the Department of Health for all public facilities. For all private facility’s, you are paid on agency rates. Accommodation and funds towards travel available.
